SHILOH

Shiloh was rescued in 2021 from a situation of neglect. He had been kept in a small pen without companionship and arrived at the sanctuary with cancer, long split hooves, and a bad case of worms. We know almost nothing about his history, though it was clear that his hooves had likely never been trimmed due his reaction to having them handled and he would flinch if you raised a hand near him, indicating that there may also have been some abuse. Shiloh latched on to Storm straight away who took this shy little one under her wing, showing her strong maternal instinct.

Defensive and untrusting on his arrival, Shiloh's rehab started with our helping him to feel safe being handled before picking up his feet to prepare him for trimming, and treating him with a herbal dewormer. The large tumor (sarcoid) in the middle of his chest was removed by our vet through cryosurgery, which uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the diseased tissue. Shiloh recovered well and has remained cancer free! Our only domesticated equine, he is now a very happy donkey, a favorite with visitors and gentle with children. He loves to tip his head into your chest for cuddles.

Shiloh means Gift in Hebrew.

“Our task must be to free ourselves… by widening our

circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures

and the whole of nature and its beauty.”

Albert Einstein
