SACRED ACTIVISM

For the vast majority of human history, we held our relationship with all of life as sacred through earth-centered practices of presence, honoring, and reciprocity, but many of the practices that sustained intact human culture for thousands of years were lost as a result of colonizing forces, leading to a collective forgetting of many of the old ways that helped us to feel held within the web of life. At Wild Peace Sanctuary, we believe that this cultural wound of separation from nature is what underlies so much of the suffering in our world.

It takes so little to rekindle and reclaim that original relationship, to remember our natural ways of being with and relating to the living world that are so integral to our wellbeing. We believe that effective and sustainable change starts from within, and that if we truly wish to facilitate change in the world then we need to act from a place of compassion, curiosity, and creativity, with a focus on what we love and in the spirit of service.

Our sacred activism projects engage film, music, art, and poetry to raise awareness of the issues of our time, bring clarity where truth has been erased or rewritten, or simply honor the beauty and sanctity of all life. We invite artists, film-makers, photographers, poets, writers, and musicians to seek ways to collaborate with us using art as prayer to express authenticity, cultivate compassion, build resilience, and inspire positive action.

The images and films below depict some of our honoring ceremonies and communal gatherings held to honor lost life, metabolize grief, pray for peace, celebrate the beauty of the natural world, and/or raise awareness of environmental, social, and political issues. Art in its purest form is an embodied practice of bringing care and attention to the things we love and long for. As Simone Weil said, “attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity, and, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer”.

“Art like prayer is a hand outstretched in the darkness,

seeking for some touch of grace which will transform

it into a hand that bestows gifts.
